TWO Dr. Denise H’s??  What the H is going on!?”

TM

What? Did you say two characters named Dr. Denise H.?  Those who have seen the first Food for the Gods short film know that the lovely and talented Canadian actress, Tara Pratt, plays the whimsical Dr. Denise Hanson, Canadian Medical Mission Specialist aboard the United States

Star Shuttle Eagle III, and crewmate to the film’s romantic lead, Lt. Richard O’Conner (Danny Dorosh)—the dashing US Naval Aviator who falls recklessly in love with native beauty, Sheenyana (much to Denise’s chagrin).  Indeed, to anyone paying attention, it is clear that the playful banter Denise uses to engage Richard is more than...well, playful banter.  Maybe Richard should have paid more attention.

Enter, the “other” Denise.   Major Denise Hinoki, M.D., Royal Canadian Air Force.  She graduated from UBC Medical in Vancouver and is active in the Canadian space program as a xenobiologist (all while harboring a secret attraction to a US Navy lieutenant, Richard “Rick” O’Conner…  Wait, this sounds familiar. Dr. Denise Hanson graduated from UBC Medical, is a xenobiologist for the Canadian space program…and harbors a secret

Major Denise Hinoki, M.D.

attraction for Richard.   Weird.  Even weirder, Denise and Denise were college roommates and best friends, despite a slight rivalry between the two geniuses.  Major Hinoki scored higher on a qualifying exam—by one question—leading to her ultimate position as the Medical Mission Specialist aboard the Star Shuttle Eagle III on man’s first faster-than-light mission to Alpha Centauri

WAIT A MINUTE!  No, that was Denise Hanson!  Not Hinoki!  Denise Hanson was the Denise aboard the Eagle III with Richard...in the 2007 short film.  Let’s back up:  The current H. Scott Hughes written screenplay for a proposed feature length remake/retelling of Food for the Gods makes no mention of Dr. Denise Hanson, but instead features a completely different character, Major Denise Hinoki, M.D., a Japanese-Canadian military officer with her own unique personality—who happens to have the same first name.  Indeed, Denise Hinoki is not the same character simply recast with a different actress.  We could never recast Tara Pratt!  In fact, the upcoming Food for the Gods II: Aftermath (the direct sequel to the original 2007 short film) features Tara Pratt reprising her roll as Dr. Denise Hanson in a flashback aboard the Eagle III (no Denise Hinoki onboard)—and doubling as Denise Hanson’s twin sister, the embittered Dr. Theresa Hanson—a Vancouver physician.  Here’s where things get strange:  In FFTG: Aftermath, in the first FFTG scene ever to take place on Earth, Dr. Theresa Hanson (Tara Pratt) receives an unexpected visit from none other than Major Denise Hinoki (played the beautiful and talented, Malaysian-Canadian actress and playwright, Grace Chin).  What the H is going on, you ask?

The answer is writer/director H. Scott Hughes.  Alas, we explain…  (CONTINUED...)                                                     [Page 1 of 2  -  1, 2 ]
