Food for the Gods  -  (original short story by Patricia C. Hughes)

The character of Lt. Richard O'Conner first appears in the original short story, "Food for the Gods," written by Patricia C. Hughes, upon which the 2007 film (directed by her son, H. Scott Hughes) is based. However, in the short story, O'Conner is unnamed—simply described by the narrator as one of the Visitors with whom Sheenyana develops a romantic relationship. In the short shory, Sheenyana describes how her

alien lover would pick flowers to place in her hair. Not until the film is his name and background firmly established. Indeed, the short story doesn't even make clear that O'Conner is human, let alone an American naval officer from Earth. Likewise, the short story is just as vague regarding Sheenyana's species. However, the story's first-person narration implies that they are certainly similar in appearance, and clearly biologically compatible—as evidenced by their affair.  It is the movie which firmly establishes that they are both human (homo sapiens).
