Food for the Gods  (original short story, cont’d)

refers to Sheenyana as “Sheenyana,” but instead referring to her only as “Sees Far”—a name given to her as a child because of her clairvoyance.  It is the 2007 film which reveals the “pronunciation” of her name to be “Sheenyana”—but the English translation of her name to indeed be “Sees Far.”  The short story author also never specifically identifies either the Kyontawa or the Visitors as being human, but clearly implies two sets of humanoid beings who are physically and biologically similar and compatible, as evidenced by her star-crossed affair.  While their mutual humanity is, however, strongly implied, it is the film which solidifies the fact that Sheenyana and Richard are both equally human (homo sapiens), two members of the same species, their genetics ultimately originating from the same planet...Earth.

The short story also establishes the mentoring relationship Sheenyana shares with Princess Xionko (known in the short story as “Girl Follows.”)  Much of Sheenyana’s first person narration in the film is quoted directly from the short story.  However, though the words spoken are largely the same, the narrator in the short story, in the end, is revealed not to be Sheenyana.  It is Xionko, as an elderly woman, telling her sensei’s story.
