FFTG Director H. Scott Hughes speaks
at Brenham Evening Lions Club
in Brenham, Texas
BRENHAM, TX -- H. Scott Hughes, co-writer and director of the short romantic drama Food for the Gods, was the featured guest speaker for the Brenham Evening Lions Club at Purcell's Country Style Buffet in Brenham, Texas on Tuesday, April 1, 2008. Lions Clubs International is a worldwide service organization. Hughes, a Brenham native, was invited by retired Blinn College literature professor Dr. Wilfred Dietrich to talk about writing, filmmaking and his recent endeavors as a film student at Vancouver Film School in Vancouver, British Columbia. Hughes talked on a number of related topics, including the expanding TV and film industries in both British Columbia and Texas, and how the industry today is moving more and more in favor of the independent filmmaker. "All of our dreams can come true," Hughes said, quoting the late Walt Disney, "if we have the courage to pursue them."
Hughes screened the short RCMP-themed documentary Duty, produced by Hughes and directed by FFTG art director Ken MacLeod (also a native Texan). He concluded the program with a trailer for Food for the Gods.

FFTG's Beverly Wu gets married, visits a Stargate,
and sabotages yet another romance in Feature Film Exley
BURNABY, BC -- After playing the manipulative Xionko, Princess Heir of Kyontawa in the short sci-fi drama Food for the Gods, as well writing and starring in her own short film, Last Week, Beverly graduated Valedictorian from Vancouver Film School's Acting for Film and TV program. Since then, she's been on a roll. In addition to several more short films, Beverly has just wrapped her first feature film, Exley, directed by Canadian indie pioneer Larry Kent. In Food for the Gods, Princess Xionko, envious of her cousin Sheenyana, reports Sheenyana's affair with Richard to her father the king Shogoto. In Exley, Beverly threatens the bonds of romance yet again. "I play an evil, plotting bridesmaid," laughs Beverly, "and event planner!"
However, not all of Beverly's weddings and romances are fictional. Indeed, she has her own real life wedding to plan. Beverly is engaged to marry Steven Hannah, on April 26, 2008. Hannah is host of the popular Web series The Steve Hannah Show. "He is the love of my life," says Beverly. So, acting may have to slow for a few weeks--at least until after the honeymoon!
Still, if she had the chance to act on another science fiction production, she would likely jump at it. Beverly Wu makes no apologies for being a serious sci-fi aficionado. "One of the highlights of the past few months was getting to act on the set of Stargate Atlantis," says Beverly with an excited gleam, but adds, "although not for the show, unfortunately!" Beverly was at Bridge Studios in Burnaby, BC, home of Stargate and numerous other major studio productions, for a 35mm cinematography workshop hosted by Kodak. It inspired the envy of several of her sci-fi fanatic friends. "One of my friends commented, 'I officially hate you! You sat in the hallowed chair of Elizabeth Weir!'" One factor is almost certain: there will be plenty more film sets, sci-fi or otherwise, in this talented young actor's future.
