H. Scott Hughes - Director, Co-Writer, Co-Composer
H. Scott Hughes earned his Bachelor of Music from Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi and spent the next several years as a professional vocalist and composer, as well as teaching music in Texas public schools. An avid writer, Hughes also studied script writing at Sam Houston State University. In 2006, Hughes relocated from Texas to the Vancouver area to study film production at Vancouver Film School, from which he graduated October 19, 2007. Hughes is the only student in his VFS class to have pitched three films and have all three films produced. Prior to Food for the Gods, Hughes penned Crazy Old Woman, a supernatural thriller directed by FFTG producer Joe Fang. Hughes wrote and produced the RCMP documentary Duty--which he also scored. He has held high positions on other films, including 1st Assistant Director on Milos, Art Director on Love Shines, Production Sound on Night Elf Battle Axe, and director of the comical "mini-drama" The Relationship. Hughes teamed with screenwriter Phillip Matte to pen Food for the Gods, based on a short story (also titled Food for the Gods) written by Hughes' mother, science fiction/mystery author Patricia C. Hughes. After filming, Hughes teamed with his lead actress Dr. Yvette Lu (Sheenyana on FFTG) to compose and record the film's original musical soundtrack featuring erhu soloist Xu Qian and vocal performances by Lu and her co-star Beverly Wu (Princess Xionko).
Zhou "Joe" Fang - Producer
Joe Fang was born and grew up in Beijing, China. The son of a well known Chinese cinematographer, Fang has directed, produced, and DPed films on both sides of the Pacific. In China, Fang wrote and directed the sensual thriller The Man in the Black Shirt. In Canada, Fang directed a supernatural thriller, Crazy Old Woman, written by FFTG director H. Scott Hughes. He also served as Art Director of Milos, written and directed by FFTG production designer Reto Mueller, and Director of Photography on See Through Me, written and directed by FFTG assistant director Jonathon Corbiere--all of which received screenings at the Vancouver International Film Centre. Additionally, Fang directed the highly praised maritime documentary Angles by the Ocean. On October 19, 2007, Fang graduated from the Film Production Program of Vancouver Film School in Vancouver, British Columbia. Fang scored high on a qualifying DOP exam. He also recently produced a music video directed by another FFTG alum Matt Hicks. Fang has returned Beijing to pursue the family business of filmmaking.
Steven Ye - Director of Photography
Steven Ye was born and grew up in Beijing, China, and has also studied in other countries including the United Kingdom and Canada. He travels regularly around the world and his travels inspire him as a filmmaker. In 2006, Ye moved to Vancouver, British Columbia to study film production at the Vancouver Film School, from which he graduated October 19, 2007. While at VFS, Ye scored exceedingly high on a qualifying DOP exam and worked on more than six films. These include as Director of Photography of the documentary Spirit Carver, producer of the romantic drama See Through Me, written and directed by FFTG 1st AD Jonathon Corbiere, as well as editing the first fine cut of the short drama Beyond a Friend--before being named Director of Photography of the ambitious sci-fi romantic drama Food for the Gods. Ye worked closely with director H. Scott Hughes to craft a beautiful cinematic look for Food for the Gods on Super 16 film, studying such films as The New World, Last of the Mohicans, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for inspiration. Since graduating VFS, Ye is currently working as Director of Photography on a short written and directed by FFTG production designer Reto Mueller.
